Not Working Title

Why do people create a title to something and then say “it’s a working title,” when later they just end up changing it to something else? By definition, doesn’t that mean their title wasn’t working?

I’m not sure why I’m leaving the comment on this page. It’s directed at the Caterpillar post. I like it. Hah. However, I’d like to see the last two words be “…since cast.” But who am I to make improvements on your body of work? Want to collaborate on a story? Shoot me an email if you do.

    • but then the last three words would be “new since cast,” and that sounds like nuisance haha
i don’t have anything particular in mind for collaborating on a story. and honestly i hardly ever set out to write stories, they just kind of happen, but if you got ideas just let me know :)

I can dig that. Similar to how I do things. That is, if you do things primarily in one sitting because that’s when that certain idea/story/plot in that certain voice happens to make itself known to you. Because that’s my operation in a nutshell. Is there a way to converse about possibly collaborating in a more private setting that you’d be comfortable with? I don’t want to spoil it for your loyal readers if we do end up scribbling a piece eventually.

Oh. And I was imagining it as “new form since cast.” You know? As in “since the transformation ordeal” type of thinking. Maybe that’s not the way people would read it. And if that’s the case, you’re way is much more preferable and user-friendly. Cheers, thuglife. Until next time!

        • yeah, most the things i do are spontaneous because i can’t focus. If i don’t finish in one sitting often i won’t get around to finishing something. i have a huge graveyard of unfinished things :(
you can email me through the form under ‘hire me.’ I’ll be up front with you though: i’m hesitant to do a collaboration. I don’t want to promise something i can’t deliver.
          thuglife indeed, my friend

  3. Thanks for letting me camp out in your blog for a little while today. I had a great time and tried to leave my campsite as good as when I arrived. I’ll be back!

  4. LMAO! Ok, so now I have to come up with a new title for my working title, instead of “working title”, which sounds almost as difficult as trying to decide on a title for my work, which isn’t working.

Funny. I had to laugh! Came bursting out of me like erratic gas bubbles.

I usually say, “tentative title” these days. But then, we’re just playing semantics. Sometimes I just give it file name to help me remember and go with it until I come up with something better. “WiP” doesn’t bother. It sounds right, to me.

Reblogged this on Paperback Writer and commented:
Personally, as a general rule I dislike using the phrase ‘Working Title’ for any piece I’m working on. If I don’t have a name, even something that just acts as a place holder, I’ll name a piece of work ‘Untitled’. This forces me to focus my mind on what the story is about and try to create a title that encompasses a feel for what the story is about, thereby giving the reader a basic idea of the type of story or style of writing to expect in the story. So, here’s what I propose: I’ve created a discussion page here so that people can express their opinions on the use of ‘Working Title’, ‘Work In Progress’, ‘Untitled’, or whatever they use and at the end we’ll have a list of viable alternatives that people could use instead.
I’ll then write this list up as a PDF and create a resource page so people can download it and add it to their personal reference library.

Well, That’s the plan anyway. Come join in the discussion and help create our first writing resource.

Maybe it should be “applicant title”, then? (>^-‘)>

Perhaps because of my own traumas with trying to name projects, I found this particularly amusing. Though I never use the phrase “working title.” I tend to call it “What it’s called until I think of something that’s decent.” XD Still, it made me laugh entirely too hard.

I just call it “Working Title” and leave it to someone else to give it a proper title, because I suck at giving my works a decent title. Nice copout, I think.

see if your title is working eh ?:P

  12. Funny! Maybe it means that the title has a job (needed to support the writer because he/she can’t finish things). THANKS for subscribing to my funny-caption photoblog! I hope I can bring you a smile (or at least a groan) every weekday.
